~ Three Steps to Happiness ~
If you ask people to tell you about their happiest memories, few will mention money. Instead, they include a gratitude for life, an appreciation of small things, the presence of love, and an enjoyment of the moment.
According to life coach Peter Cohen, if you put effort into your close relationships, you'll feel happier as a result. Job satisfaction is vital too. Those who feel what they do is a vocation are generally more content. Acts of kindness also make you feel happier. Lottery winners who have donated their winnings to charities report never having had so much pleasure in their lives.
Martin Seligman, a leader of the positive psychology movement, has created a similar three-stage model for happiness. The first stage is made up of simple pleasures: drinking, eating, watching a good film, etc. The second involves doing something we are good at. The third stage comes from using your strengths in the service of something bigger than yourself. It's when you combine stages two and three, he says, that you find long-lasting happiness.
